"The Prom" (2020) Review

bevor wir mit dem heutigen Thema anfangen, möchte ich euch mitteilen, dass ich mich für einen Rhythmus, in dem ich posten möchte, entschlossen habe. Da viel auf meinen anderen Sozialen Medien passiert, poste ich hier nur 2x im Monat, zumindest ist das mein Mindestanspruch an mich. Es kann natürlich immer sein, dass ich mehr hochlade. Ich bin auch immer offen für Themenvorschläge!
Nun aber zum heutigen Thema.
Ich hatte im letzten Post erwähnt, dass ich nun auch Netflix-Kunde bin und nun eine breite Vielfalt an Serien und Filmen zur Verfügung habe. "Stranger Things" war meine erste Wahl und im Moment schaue ich auch "Fate - The Winx Saga", aber Ende November/Anfang Dezember habe ich mitbekommen, dass Netflix ein LGTBQ+-Musical herausbringen wird und ich war gespannt. Ich liebe Musicals und ich freue mich auch darauf nach der Pandemie wieder Musicals besuchen zu können, zumindest ist das mein Plan.
Für alle, die diesen Eintrag lesen und nicht wissen, was LGTBQ+ bedeutet, erkläre ich es hier kurz, da ich im Text wahrscheinlich nur diese Abkürzung verwenden werde.
LGTBQ+ steht für die Menschen, die weder heterosexuell, noch heteroromantisch sind. In der deutschen Sprache spricht man häufig von der Regenbogen-Community.
Ich rede von dem Film "The Prom" und nachdem ich in der vergangenen Woche auf Instagram mit ein paar Nutzern darüber geschrieben und sie habe abstimmen lassen, verfasse ich heute eine Review dazu.

before we start with today's topic, I want to inform you about my posting rythm on this blog. Because I'm very active on other social media, I decided to post two times a month here at least. It can always be more and I'm open for your suggestions!
But back to today's topic.
As I wrote in my last entry, I'm a Netflix owner now and that means, that I have a big collection of series and movies to watch. "Stranger Things" was my first choice and I'm watching "Fate - The Winx Saga" at the moment, but in the end of November/beginning of December I noticed, that Netflix will release a LGTBQ+ musical and I was tempted. I'm in love with musical and I'm excited about visiting those again after the pandemic, at least this is my plan.
For everyone, who's reading this entry and doesn't know what LGTBQ+ means, I'll try to explain because I'll use this term throughout the entry.
LGTBQ+ is the community for all people that aren't heterosexual or hetero-romantic.
I'm talking about "The Prom" and after I wrote about it with other people or after I made polls, I'm going to write a review now.

Im Hauptfokus steht die junge Emma Nolan, gespielt von Jo Ellen Pellman, welche in Edgewater, einer konservativen Ortschaft in Indiana lebt. Der Abschlussball soll gestrichen werden, da Emma zusammen mit ihrer Freundin Alyssa, gespielt von Ariana DeBose, dorthin gehen möchte. Ein homosexuelles Paar auf einem Abschlussball? Das ist unmöglich!
Der Streit in der Kleinstadt erregt die Aufmerksamkeit von vier Persönlichkeiten des Broadways und sie beschließen, anfangs nur um ihre Karriere zu retten, dem jungen Mädchen zu helfen.
Nach und nach verzwickt sich die Situation aber immer mehr.
The main focus lies on Emma Nolan, played by Jo Ellen Pellman, who lives in Edgewater, a small conservative place in Indiana. Prom is about to be cancelled because Emma wants to go there with her girlfriend Alyssa, played by Ariana DeBose. A homosexual pair visiting prom? Impossible!
This argument goes viral, gets into the world of four broadway stars and they decide, in the beginning only to save their career, to help the young girl.
But as time goes on everything seems to get difficulter.

Ich kannte den Film nicht wirklich. Wie am Anfang beschrieben, habe ich mitbekommen, dass Netflix einen LGTBQ+ Film als Musical herausbringen wird, aber ich wusste weder von der Handlung (Ich habe den Trailer vorher nicht gesehen), noch war mir bewusst, dass der Film auf einem Musical basiert. Wo wir auch schon beim wichtigsten Aspekt eines Musical wären.. Die Musik.
Das erste Lied, welches ich je von diesem Film gehört habe, war "Just Breathe", gesungen von Emma Nolan und ich fand, dass es gut als Eröffnungslied funktioniert hätte, leider kam es erst an zweiter Stelle im Film. Es ist das Einstiegslied von Emma und beschreibt ihre Gefühle in dieser Kleinstadt ganz gut. Ich hatte auf Instagram eine Frage dazu gestellt, ob es noch andere Leute wie mich gab. Ich war irritiert davon, dass Emma die ganze Zeit über gelächelt hat. Klar, man kann es als Fassade nehmen, die sie sich aufgebaut hat, aber wieso sollte sie? Sie geht ganz offen damit um, dass sie lesbisch ist und eigentlich wirkte ihr Lied auf mich situationsbeschreibend. Sie ist homosexuell, aber darf das nicht ausleben. Warum sollte sie da lächeln?
Ein anderes Lied, worüber ich hier sprechen möchte ist "Alyssa Green". Ich liebe es und zwar aus dem Grund, dass es mich persönlich berührt. Mittlerweile kenne ich beide Versionen des Liedes, einmal die aus dem Musical und die aus der Netflix-Produktion, und ich muss sagen, dass ich finde, dass Ariana eine super Leistung abgeliefert hat!
An dritter Stelle möchte ich noch "Love Thy Neighbor" erwähnen. Ich habe gemischte Gefühle, was dieses Lied, aber auch diese Szene angeht. Das Lied wird gesungen von Andrew Rannells, welcher Trent Oliver spielt. An sich ist das Lied genial, es bleibt einem im Kopf und man kann sich sehr gut dazu bewegen. Die Nachricht, die das Lied übermitteln soll, ist ebenfalls gelungen, aber ich fand es schwierig, dass Jugendliche, die sehr durch ihre Eltern und auch durch die Ortschaft, in der sie leben geprägt sind, plötzlich durch einen Song überstimmt werden sollen. Ein Musical stellt vieles dramatisiert dar, das ist mir klar, aber das hat mich sehr skeptisch gemacht.
Doch legen wir den Fokus nun auf die Schauspieler, ich selber mochte den Cast sehr, habe mich aber bei anderen erkundigt, die vielleicht selbst zu der LGTBQ+ Community gehören wie sie die Darstellung in diesem Film fanden.
Im Schnitt waren meine Follower zu 75% zufrieden mit der Darstellung der Community, allerdings gingen die Stimmen sehr weit auseinander. So gab es Personen, die zu 100% zufrieden waren, während andere der Darstellung nur eine Bewertung von maximal 1/10 Sternen gaben.
Ein weiterer Kritikpunkt, den ich unter anderem in anderen Reviews finden konnte, war, dass Barry Glickman häufig in Musicals von homosexuellen Männern dargestellt wird und diese die Rolle genial verkörpern können. In der Netflix-Adaption hat man für diese Rolle James Corden gecastet. James Corden ist eine bekannte Person des öffentlichen Lebens, aber er ist heterosexuell und so war es auch für mich mal interessant zu erfragen, wie das meine Follower sehen.

Und auch hier sind die Meinung sehr weit auseinander gegangen. Insgesamt ging es tendenziell (70% auf einer Skala) in Richtung "Alles okay.". Hier waren auch wieder die Antworten ausschlaggebend, die extrem in eine Richtung gingen. Es gab einige, die für 0%-10% abgestimmt haben und wieder andere waren bei 80%-100% bei "Alles okay.". Wie sieht ihr das?
Eine letzte Frage, die ich allen gestellt habe, weil es mich persönlich auch sehr bewegt hat, war die Screentime der Hauptcharaktere. Ich persönlich hatte das Gefühl als würde die Geschichte von Alyssa und Emma sehr unter den Broadwaystars leiden und das fand ich sehr schade. Da stimmte mir der Großteil zu.
Zum Schluss möchte ich noch einmal generell über den Film reden. Ich mochte die Geschichte, die Musik und auch die optische Inszenierung. Leider wirkte der Film an einigen Stellen zu überladen. Ja, es geht um den Abschlussball und es kommen Broadwaystars, um einer Teenagerin zu helfen, aber manchmal wirkte der Film ein wenig drüber.
Alles in allem kann ich den Film aber jedem empfehlen, der mal eine musikalische Auszeit von seinem momentanen Leben braucht. Ich nehme mir auf alle Fälle vor mir mal das Musical anzusehen, wenn es nach Deutschland kommen sollte. Als Musical mochte ich den Film, aber als LGTBQ+ Film fand ich ihn schwierig, einfach weil die Protagonistinnen ziemlich in den Hintergrund gerückt sind.
Dennoch ist er sehenswert!
I didn't know the movie. As I wrote before, I noticed that Netflix will release a LGTBQ+ movie, but I didn't know the story (I hadn't watch the trailer.), neither did I know that it was based on a real musical. Coming to one of the main topics in a musical.. The music.
The first song, which I heard from the movie, was "Just Breathe", sung by Emma Nolan and I think, that it would have been a great entrance song. Sadly it was played a bit later. It's the opening song for Emma and it describes her feelings in this small town. I asked my followers on Instagram, if they were also irritated about Emma's never-ending smile. Of course, you could consider this smile as a wall to keep other's out, but why should she? She's openly gay and somehow her song feels like she's describing her situation. She's gay, but can't show her relationship. Why should she smile?
Another song, I want to talk about is "Alyssa Green". I love it and that's because I can relate to it. Now I know both versions of the song, the original musical one and the version from the Netflix adaptation, and I've got to say, that Ariana did a great job singing it!
On third place I want to talk about "Love Thy Neighbor". I have mixed feelings about this song, that was sung by Andrew Rannells, who plays Trent Oliver. The song's amazing, it's catchy and it's good for dancing. The message is also very good, but I think it's difficult. I don't think that teenagers, who get/got influenced by their parents and their hometown, can be changed after just one song. Musicals tend to overdramatisize things, but this one of a bit.. too much.
But let's look at the actors. I'm in love with the cast, but I asked some other people, that maybe also belong to the LGTBQ+ community, how they like the representation of their community in this movie.
75% of my followers were okay with the representation, but their opinions were strong. There were people, that were 100% okay with it and some just gave 1 out of 10 stars.
Another point that I came across while reading other reviews is that the character Barry Glickman is often played by gay actors in the musical. In the Netflix adaptation they chose to cast James Corden. He's a famous person, but he isn't gay and so it was also interesting for me to ask my followers about this topic.

And again my followers had a strong opinion. All in all it ended by "Everything's okay." but there were also people, who decided to go with 0-10% (= Wasted opportunity). How about you?
A last question, that I asked myseld, was about the screentime of the main characters. I had the feeling, that Emma and Alyssa needed mor time. They "suffered" under the presence of the Broadway stars and that's a pity and many of my followers agreed.
In the end I'd like to talk about the movie in general. I really liked the story, the music and the visual things. Sadly the movie was a bit over-the-top. Yes, it's about prom and there are Broadyway stars to help a teenager, but it was too much for me.
All in all I can recommend the movie to everyone, who needs a pause from his/her/their life. I plan to go to the musical once it's played in Germany. I like the movie as a musical, but as a LGTBQ+ movie it's difficult because the protagonists weren't in the main focus.
Nevertheless the movie is watchable!
